I've been putting Geoshie through the design gauntlet and been streamlining a lot of the game ideas I originally had. The result is a much more unique game, but one that feels and plays vastly different from the version you'll find in the posts below. PvP combat (and combat in its entirety) has been removed, as well as any need for networking. What this means is that Geoshie is a very strongly a single player experience now, and that because of that hosting, networking, and security concerns become moot for me. It's sort of win-win situation (unless you like multiplayer, in which case it's really more of a win-lose situation); with more streamlined and focused gameplay and less work on my part. And now I can offer the game for free.
The skeleton in the closet here is that I've jumped over to Silverlight and Windows Phone for development, for the simple reason that Microsoft GAVE ME A PHONE. That's kind of nice of them. I've been able to all summer long actually compile and run the code I'm working on, and that's super exciting. But, while cross platform development isn't out of the question, nothing will be done with that until I finish the game for Windows Phone, and I know that drops the possible user base pretty significantly
Also bear in mind that, as stated before, Geoshie is still going to be custom made for the RIT campus, which means that you will need to be on the RIT campus in order to play it. The logistics behind making a cohesive and engaging story without out doing location specific events is, quite frankly, beyond my comprehension.
There's a whole lot of other stuff that could go here, and I kind of want to go and explain the whole game and story, but instead I'll wrap up by saying that I'm really excited about Geoshie right now, and am even more excited to be doing things and seeing it slowly take shape into an actual game. Everything is starting to feel right, and, disregarding any unforeseen circumstances, it could turn out to be a really great and unique experience.
I'll leave you with a quick interface sketch I did while working on different camera options.
